What’s so social about social media?
I have been asking myself this for some time now. Social media seems to have taken over the world. The reality is you cannot ignore it. Hundred’s of millions of people are involved in this new craze that is just a few years old. It’s also fun – that’s why Facebook and YouTube are worth billions.
96% of generation Y are involved in social media. Thinking from a business perspective, that is easy and cost effective marketing!
There are so many different forms of social media:
• For photos, it’s Flickr
• For videos, it’s YouTube
• Social networking for the younger set starts with MySpace
• Social networking for the growing and grown set, it’s Facebook
• To get connected and network with the business set, it’s LinkedIn
• For individual expressions, there are weblogs, or blogs
• If you want to say a few words, there’s micro-blogging and interconnecting – known to most as Twitter
• For chronologging it’s Wikipedia
• And of course, there are your personal website and business website, which are priceless.
These major networks in social media are or try to be socially engaging and are growing by the second…
It’s just incredible to know that you can be anywhere in the world at any one time and with your blackberry or iphone receive or make a phone call, receive an instant text message, take a photograph and upload it on Flickr, receive an email, update your Facebook status, upload and watch videos on YouTube, and so much more. The cyber world is instant and is growing rapidly.
I became a player in this social media obsession recently after learning this is the most effective way to build and grow a business. If you want to be effective, immediate and informative in building awareness, social media is a must. It’s what people want and ‘need’ in their lives in this modern society for which we live in today, to be constantly updated on the latest news and happenings in the world. There is no time like the present.
To get going and get positioned, so that your value (either in social, business, fun, or money) can be realized you need to be involved and participate constantly and in a meaningful way. Social media is fluid, it moves and changes daily. It is text, audio, photo, and video. It’s every media and it’s every second. It’s current and it’s constant.
